SCC Scholarship Recipients

Did you know that the SCC offers scholarships to deserving students and promising athletes? Every year, the club selects winners based on the following criteria: applicants must be on the Salmon Arm Secondary (SAS) mountain bike team, attend a post-secondary school the following year, and demonstrate community involvement. The school and SAS coach Chris Stromgren recommend the winners.

Here are this year’s recipients!

Marika Meerza
Marika is part of the SAS mountain bike team and helps out with our Tuesday Youth Rides. Here’s what she said when she found out she had been selected for this year’s scholarship:

“I have appreciated the opportunities that the biking community has given me, through trail building and leading the Tuesday night rides. I plan on attending Okanagan College from 2022-2024 to get an Associate of Arts degree. I hope to transfer those credits to UVIC and finish Post-Secondary with a Bachelor of Arts. I will use your generous award to help pay for books and my tuition. I am truly grateful for the support from the biking community and this scholarship.”

Here are a few photos of Marika in her element.

Finn Rodwell
Finn had an amazing spring season riding and competing for the SAS mountain bike team, finishing 1st in both local XC races, and 3rd at the provincial XC race. Here’s his reaction to receiving our scholarship:

“This award means a lot to me because I have been a part of the bike team for many years and it demonstrates how I have improved so much as a mountain bike rider and racer. I also wanted to give a huge thanks to the volunteers that helped out at races and practices, and especially to our coach Mr. Stromgren. Strom did an amazing job making sure everyone on the team enjoyed themselves and felt included within the team. I will be putting the money from the scholarship towards my tuition to the University of Victoria next year, where I will be pursuing a degree in engineering.”

And a picture of Finn from an enduro race at last season’s provincials in Langford:
